Penn Yan man charged after animal abuse

A puppy was removed from a Penn Yan home after police reviewed video that allegedly showed the animal being struck repeatedly.

Demetrius D. Murphy, 41, of Penn Yan, was arrested Sept. 11 and charged with torturing and injuring animals under state Agriculture and Markets Law, a misdemeanor.

Police said a complainant provided footage showing Murphy striking the puppy multiple times with a leash and his hand. The video also allegedly showed him yelling at the animal and lifting it by its tail and neck.

Murphy was taken into custody at his home, processed at the police department and released with an appearance ticket for Penn Yan Village Court.

The puppy was turned over to Animal Control. Police said additional charges could be filed after an examination for injuries that weren’t visible.
