New York’s child care subsidy program is running dry, leaving families and providers without support across 14 counties and New York City, according to Spectrum News. Lawmakers from both parties say the $400 million added in this year’s budget isn’t enough and are demanding Gov. Kathy Hochul act swiftly to patch this year’s shortfall and plan for 2026.
Some parents, like single mother Ericka Wright, lost assistance without warning. Providers now fear losing dozens of families. The crisis stems from expanded eligibility that outpaced funding. Lawmakers want data on who’s missing out and more aggressive action from Hochul’s administration.
The governor’s office points to $7 billion in child care investments during her tenure but has not committed to immediate new funding.
