Onondaga County has confirmed its first human case of West Nile virus since 2019 and the season’s first detection of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), according to WSYR-TV.
An elderly Cicero resident was hospitalized after contracting West Nile but is now recovering at home. Meanwhile, EEE was discovered in mosquitoes trapped on East Taft Road in Cicero as part of the county’s routine surveillance.
Both viruses are spread by mosquito bites and can cause symptoms like fever, headache, and, in rare cases, brain swelling. Officials urge residents to take preventive steps and monitor mosquito activity closely as the Health Department intensifies surveillance efforts.
