A new $2.1 million federal grant will allow the University of Rochester’s Eastman Institute for Oral Health to train more dentists and reach underserved patients, URMC announced. The five-year initiative, called EXCEL, aims to address critical care gaps, especially for people with complex medical needs and disabilities.
EXCEL includes a dental public health residency with a Master of Public Health degree, a general dentistry fellowship in complex care, and a new Oral Health Resource Center focused on health equity and education. The program combines clinical training with leadership skills to serve high-need populations.
More than 40% of EIOH’s patients face health issues too complex for traditional providers. Leaders say the program will create a model of care that could be replicated nationwide to boost access and outcomes.
