Cornell report outlines changes to address sexual assault

A Cornell University task force has released recommendations aimed at reducing sexual assault among undergraduates.

The report follows eight months of research and community discussions examining campus culture and safety.

The task force called for expanded education, including new courses on sexual health and relationships, and improved communication about reporting and support resources.

It also recommended increasing physical safety measures and adding non-classroom programming focused on prevention.

University data shows 35% of undergraduate women reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact in 2025, up from 23% in 2023. Among men, 8% reported such experiences in 2025, compared with 9% in 2023.

“Students described uncertainty about how and when to report concerns or seek support, whom to contact, and whether reports lead to follow-up or meaningful action,” Love said.

The report also highlights a connection between alcohol use and incidents of sexual assault, recommending alcohol education as part of prevention efforts.

An implementation committee will develop plans to put the recommendations into practice.
