Tompkins County wins $1M for housing at South Hill

Tompkins County has secured $1 million from New York State’s County Infrastructure Grant Program to kickstart construction at the long-vacant Emerson Power Transmission site, according to the Ithaca Journal. The grant will fund vital infrastructure for “The Woods,” the first residential phase of the massive SouthWorks Ithaca redevelopment.

The project will ultimately deliver 915 housing units and over 800,000 square feet of reimagined industrial and commercial space. Officials say the funding will unlock the first 100 affordable units through new roads, utilities, and stormwater systems.

Local leaders call the award a milestone for revitalizing South Hill into a vibrant, mixed-income neighborhood that blends history with modern needs.
