New York jobless claims rise, buck national trend

New York saw a jump in unemployment claims last week, even as the national numbers dipped, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Initial claims in the state rose to 15,713, up from 12,287 the week before.

Nationally, jobless claims fell by 4,000 to 233,000. Kansas experienced the steepest climb in weekly claims, while Delaware posted the biggest drop, down nearly 59%.

The data, part of the Labor Department’s weekly update, reflects shifting employment patterns across the country and is being shared in localized reports via the USA TODAY Network.
