Seneca County Board to spotlight youth, contracts, and public safety at meeting

The Seneca County Board of Supervisors will convene for its monthly meeting Tuesday evening in Waterloo, where officials are set to address a broad slate of resolutions covering youth services, public safety, workforce development, and infrastructure.

Among the highlights is the presentation of the Brightest Star Awards, which honor middle school students from across the county for exemplary character and community involvement. The honorees include Phoebe Leo (Romulus Central School), Anna Pollino and Joey Mull (Seneca Falls Middle School), and Joshua Borst (South Seneca Middle School).

The meeting will also include a presentation from Theresa Lahr, Project Director of STEPS (Seneca Towns Engaging People for Solutions), who will update the board on current initiatives. Additionally, local resident Tony Del Plato will speak on “The Rights of Water/The Rights of Nature” during the petitioners’ section.

A range of resolutions are up for vote, including:

  • New funding agreements: The board is expected to authorize over $215,000 in funding from local school districts to support school-based substance abuse prevention and clinic services for the 2025–2026 academic year.
  • Youth services plan: A new plan for the Supervision and Treatment Services for Juveniles Program (STSJP) is on the agenda, aimed at keeping at-risk youth in community settings and out of detention.
  • Workforce appointments: The board will vote on several reappointments and new appointments to the Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board, including representatives from Del Lago Resort and Casino, Seneca Dairy Systems, and Finger Lakes Community College.
  • Public safety staffing: The Sheriff’s Office is seeking approval to hire multiple experienced correction officers at higher pay steps and to add two part-time Special Patrol Officer positions for court and meeting security.
  • Infrastructure spending: A proposal to amend contracts with Wendel for sewer system upgrades at county wastewater treatment plants will be considered, along with a resolution to auction off a surplus fuel tank following airport improvements.
  • Tourism grants: The board will vote on community celebration grants, including $2,500 for Seneca Lake Resorts’ July 4 fireworks and $2,000 for downtown Seneca Falls Christmas lighting, sponsored by the It’s a Wonderful Run 5K Committee.
  • Proposed law on youth hunting: A public hearing will be scheduled for August 12 on a local law to extend supervised youth hunting privileges for 12- and 13-year-olds through 2028.

The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Seneca County Office Building. A Health & Human Services Committee session will precede it at 5:45 p.m. to finalize the Brightest Star recognition resolution.
