Efforts to combat an invasive aquatic plant are now underway in Cayuga Lake, according to the Cayuga County Health Department. Officials began applying herbicide in the Wells College Bay area this week, aiming to control the spread of hydrilla.
Ten treatments using fluridone are scheduled through August, with a possible copper-based application later in the summer. The treated water remains safe for activities like swimming and fishing, but shouldn’t be used on sensitive greenhouse plants.
Hydrilla, native to Asia, Africa, and Australia, poses a serious threat to local ecosystems if left unchecked.
