How to check your Section 8 voucher payment status online

Section 8 recipients who rely on monthly housing assistance can now check the status of their voucher payments online using a variety of tools provided by HUD and local public housing authorities (PHAs).

Whether you’re a tenant waiting for confirmation or a landlord tracking payment disbursement, knowing where to look can help you avoid confusion or delays.

Where to check your payment status

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) does not offer a centralized payment tracker for tenants. Instead, you must go through your local housing authority. Here are the main ways to check:

1. PHA portals

Many local housing agencies have their own online portals where tenants and landlords can:

  • View voucher payment history
  • Track pending disbursements
  • Update contact and banking information

Popular portals include:

  • AssistanceCheck.com (used by several state agencies)
  • RentCafé PHA platforms
  • MyHousing or GoSection8 logins

Check with your housing authority’s website to find the correct portal for your area.

2. Direct landlord confirmation

If your voucher goes directly to your landlord, they may receive the payment before you’re notified. Tenants can ask landlords if the May 2025 subsidy has arrived and whether the rent balance is fully covered.

3. Contact your housing caseworker

If you can’t access an online account, call or email your assigned caseworker at your local PHA. Provide your:

  • Full name
  • Voucher number (if available)
  • Last four digits of your Social Security number

Response times may vary based on the agency’s workload.

What to do if payment is missing

If your payment has not posted by the expected date:

  • Confirm with your landlord whether they’ve received the subsidy.
  • Log into your housing portal to check for updates.
  • Contact your housing authority immediately.
  • Document all communication in case of a formal complaint.

Some PHAs also allow tenants to file a grievance or submit a support ticket directly through their online system.

Additional resources

You can find your local PHA and contact info through HUD’s national directory here: HUD Public Housing Agency Locator

Many housing authorities also post updates about payment delays or portal maintenance on their homepages or social media.
