Lawmakers back controversial rollback of school oversight

New York lawmakers are defending state budget changes that relax oversight of nonpublic schools, according to Spectrum News. The changes allow religious and private schools more flexibility to prove they’re meeting educational standards and delay enforcement for elementary students until 2032.

Critics, including Education Commissioner Betty Rosa, warn the move undermines accountability and weakens protections for students. Orthodox Jewish lawmakers, however, say the new rules honor parental rights and recognize the quality of education at institutions like yeshivas. Assemblyman Kalman Yeger and others called the reforms smart policy and a response to unfair scrutiny.

Opponents in the Legislature, like Sen. Liz Krueger, argue the shift prioritizes politics over children’s rights to a sound education. While supporters claim it ensures fair treatment, Rosa calls it a retreat from educational responsibility.
