William Smith lacrosse cruises past Husson in NCAA opener

William Smith lacrosse opened NCAA tournament play in dominant fashion, rolling past Husson 25-2 on Saturday afternoon at Amherst College. With the victory, the 13th-ranked Herons advance to the second round and will face No. 11 Amherst on Sunday at 1 p.m.

First-year Cynthia Lyman led a balanced and explosive offensive effort, tallying a career-high seven points on two goals and five assists. Junior Hannah Evans scored four times, while seniors Katherine Murray and Lauren Collins each notched hat tricks. Murray also hit a major milestone, becoming just the 12th player in program history to surpass 200 career points.


Thirteen different players found the back of the net for the Herons, who broke program NCAA tournament records with 25 goals and 25 draw controls. Senior Kate Colvin dominated the draw circle with seven controls, while Lily Kuhn led the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

William Smith outshot Husson 40-3 and held a 25-5 edge in draws. The Herons scored the first 12 goals and never looked back, leading 15-2 at the half before shutting out the Eagles in the second half.
