Medical marijuana market faces steep new hurdle

New York’s medical marijuana industry, once dominated by major corporate players, is now shrinking—and a new $15 million licensing fee may accelerate its decline, according to Capital Tonight.

The number of certified patients and dispensaries in the state continues to drop. Under the latest state budget, operators who want to serve both medical and recreational markets must pay a hefty dual-license fee, a move critics say could deter investment and limit access.

Industry advocates warn the sector may need rebuilding from scratch, as few operators are likely to shoulder such high costs in an already shrinking market.
