A Hector resident’s encounter with a satellite employee sparked concern after the worker requested personal details like Social Security digits, leading to a sheriff’s office report.
Evan Forrest suspected a scam when the worker returned and asked for his wife’s Social Security number. Authorities later confirmed the visitor’s identity was legitimate, but used the incident to remind residents: always ask for ID and never share private information without verification.
Schuyler County’s sheriff stressed that scams often come via phone or internet and warned against disclosing Social Security or financial details under any circumstance.
