Auburn gains approval to add hotel tax

Visitors staying at hotels in Auburn will soon pay a new city tax, according to The Citizen.

The 2025-26 New York state budget includes legislation authorizing Auburn to impose an occupancy tax of up to 5%, following a push from city officials and state Sen. Rachel May.

City leaders estimate the tax could generate $500,000 annually, helping address a nearly $3 million budget shortfall.

The tax will be added to Cayuga County’s existing occupancy tax, joining similar efforts in cities like Syracuse and Ithaca.
