Francisco Lindor homers twice as Mets hold off Phillies in series opener (highlights)

The New York Mets (16-7) pushed their win streak to five with a 5-4 series-opening victory over the Philadelphia Phillies (13-10) on Monday night at Citi Field.

Francisco Lindor wasted no time getting things started, launching a leadoff homer off Aaron Nola, his second straight game with a leadoff blast. Jesse Winker followed suit in the second, adding another solo shot to give the Mets a quick 2-0 edge.

Tylor Megill delivered a dominant performance on the mound. The right-hander struck out 10 over 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit and four walks. He dropped his season ERA to a sparkling 1.09 and has been a key piece for a Mets rotation that leads the majors in ERA.

Reliever Reed Garrett kept the Phillies quiet in the sixth, extending his perfect streak of inherited runners stranded to nine. Lindor struck again in the seventh, crushing his second homer of the night, a three-run shot off Jose Ruiz, to give New York a 5-0 cushion.

That margin nearly disappeared in the ninth, as closer Edwin Díaz surrendered a three-run homer to Bryson Stott, with two of those runs charged to Max Kranick. However, Díaz bounced back with strikeouts of Trea Turner and Bryce Harper to seal the win.

Box Score

The Mets look to keep their hot streak going on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. with Griffin Canning on the bump.
