New York inspector general urges bodycam policy update after prison death

The New York state inspector general is pushing for an update to body camera policies after footage from an automatic video recall feature helped uncover details of Robert Brooks’ fatal beating at Marcy Correctional Facility.

Inspector General Lucy Lang wants state officials to modernize the 2015 policy, noting technological advancements. The footage, which recorded 18 hours of video despite officers not manually activating their cameras, showed Brooks being restrained and beaten by correctional officers on Dec. 9. He died the next day, leading to multiple officers being charged.

The Department of Corrections is working toward universal body camera use in all state prisons. Officials are reviewing the recommendation as policies continue to evolve alongside new recording and storage capabilities.
