New York correction officers are set to return to work Monday following a new agreement with the state’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. The deal requires at least 85% of staff to report back before taking effect.
This marks the fourth time the state has attempted to reinstate workers since their illegal strike began on Feb. 17. The agreement ensures reinstated health insurance, no further disciplinary actions, and a safety committee addressing the HALT Act’s impact. However, those who continue striking could face legal consequences.
Some correction officers have chosen to resign instead of returning, while others remain on the picket lines. Meanwhile, nine facilities will resume weekend visitations, restoring a sense of normalcy for incarcerated individuals.
