Negotiations between the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association and the state are set to resume today, following a union push to expedite the process. Originally planned for later in the week, mediation was moved up to Monday, Feb. 24, as strikes continue across at least 30 correctional facilities.
NYSCOPBA officials say they urged faster talks, and state representatives quickly agreed. Mediation will involve a third-party negotiator working to resolve disputes between NYSCOPBA and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. While an agreement is possible, the process could also end in a stalemate.
With correctional staff shortages mounting, today’s talks are critical in determining how long the strikes—and their impact on state prisons—will last.
