The world of competitive air guitar is coming to life at Hobart and William Smith as HWS Theatre presents Airness, a play by Chelsea Marcantel that blends comedy, music, and heart. The production runs from February 20-22 at the McDonald Theatre in the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts.
Set in the high-stakes world of air guitar championships, Airness follows reigning national champion D. Vicious (Andrew Milliman ’26) as he prepares to defend his title. When newcomer Nina (Izzy Huelgas ’25) steps into the scene, she quickly learns that mastering an invisible guitar is far more challenging than she imagined. Alongside a colorful cast of competitors—Shreddy Eddy (Nathaniel Phillips ’26), Facebender (Aaron Vicioso ’26), and Golden Thunder (Kevin “KJ” Johnson)—Nina embarks on a journey of self-discovery and friendship, all while battling rival Cannibal Queen (Derrielle Faulkner ’25). The ultimate question: who will achieve “airness” and go on to represent the U.S. at the World Championships?
The production features original 60-second cuts of classic rock anthems by Guns N’ Roses, Quiet Riot, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and Bon Jovi, immersing audiences in the electric energy of air guitar performance.
Director and Professor of Theatre Chris Woodworth has designed the production to be an interactive experience, breaking the traditional boundaries between audience and stage. “We’re all in this magical air guitar world together,” says Woodworth, “and maybe that experience will inspire audience members to take a chance on a performance of their own one day—air guitar, karaoke, or heck, an HWS Theatre production!”
The show benefits from the expertise of Cassie J. Sneider, a former National Air Guitar Championship competitor and owner of Geneva’s vintage toy store and arcade, Total Recall 315. Sneider serves as both the production’s air guitar consultant and onstage announcer.
Vicioso, who portrays Facebender, says audiences may be surprised by the play’s depth. “It’s not just about playing pretend guitar,” he explains. “It’s about passion and community.” Faulkner, playing Cannibal Queen, adds that Airness highlights “the impact and importance of self-expression and the power of an individual’s story.”
The technical team includes set designer and technical director Ed Hallborg, lighting designer Kelly Walker, and costume designer Katharine Tarkulich. Lauren Davidson ’26 serves as stage manager, assisted by Ky Apple ’26, Ada Bastedo ’27, Dee Gilner ’26, and Quinn DeRosa ’28.
Tickets are free and can be reserved in advance, with remaining tickets available at the Box Office one hour before each performance.
