New York ranks 15th in list of most educated states

New York secured the 15th spot in WalletHub’s latest ranking of the most educated states in America, according to data released this week by the personal-finance website. The report evaluated all 50 states based on 18 metrics related to educational attainment, school quality, and achievement gaps.

The findings highlight New York’s strengths and weaknesses in education. While the state excels in the percentage of residents holding advanced degrees—ranking 6th nationally—it struggles in other areas, such as the percentage of high school diploma holders, where it ranked near the bottom at 44th. New York also ranks 50th for its gender gap in educational attainment.

“There’s a strong correlation between being more educated and receiving higher compensation,” said Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, in the report. He noted that the most educated states offer high-quality educational opportunities from elementary school through graduate programs, fostering environments where children have greater chances for success.

Massachusetts topped the list as the most educated state, with nearly 47% of adults holding at least a bachelor’s degree and more than 21% with a graduate degree. The state also ranks among the top in public school quality and student performance on national assessments.

Experts cited in the WalletHub study emphasized the importance of education in economic resilience and development. States with higher education levels are more adaptable to economic shocks, as better-educated workforces can pivot to new industries more effectively.

“Investment consistently flows to states with effective infrastructure, legal systems, and a well-educated workforce,” remarked Mark Fincher, an associate professor at Mississippi State University, underscoring the vital role education plays in sustaining economic growth.

The report also highlighted concerns regarding K-12 education quality, which experts said affects college readiness. Although high school graduation rates have improved, many students still leave high school underprepared for higher education, creating long-term challenges.
