Junior Tanner Daniels scored twice as the top-ranked Hobart hockey team cruised to a 6-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With the win, Hobart is now 19-1-0 on the season with a 14-1-0 mark in conference play.
Daniels added an assist to finish the game with three points. He shared game-high honors with Luke Aquaro(1g, 2a) who also had three points. Junior Damon Beaverplayed all 60 minutes in goal and made 24 saves.
Six different players recorded a point for the Huskies (5-14-1, 2-12-1). Marcus Torgner and Connor Donovan scored the goals. Mason Palmer played just over 58 minutes in goal. He made 37 saves.
STREAKING
- With today’s win, Hobart has now won 46 straight games at The Cooler.
- Daniels has recorded at least a point in nine straight games.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hobart finished the game with a 43-26 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Statesmen were 1-for-3 on the power play and the Huskies were 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
OPENING FRAME
- Hobart jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Statesmen scored the goals on three of their first five shots on goal in the game. Aquaro also hit a post in the first 10 minutes of the game.
- Senior Matthew Iasenza opened the scoring at the 7:16 mark of the frame. He collected a pass from sophomore Chris Duclair, raced down the right wing, cut past a defender and slipped a shot past Palmer for his third goal of the season.
- Daniels extended Hobart’s lead to 2-0 with just under nine minutes left in the stanza. He wristed a shot over Palmer’s blocker into the upper left corner of the cage. His 13th goal of the season was assisted by Swift and senior Shane Shell.
- Seventy-eight seconds later, first-year Ryan Remick picked up a loose puck in the right circle and wristed a shot over Palmer’s blocker for his third goal of the season. Sophomore Brandon Sacchetti and Logan Gotinsky had assists on the goal.
MIDDLE STANZA
- Shell notched his fifth goal of the season 81 seconds into the second period. He collected a centering pass from Aquaro and tapped the shot past Palmer.
- Torgner broke up the shutout bid just past the halfway point of regulation. His third goal of the year was assisted by Gavin Simopoulos and Cole Ouellette.
FINAL PERIOD
- Daniels added his second goal of the game and team-leading 14th of the season at the 4:19 mark of the third period. He redirected a shot from Swift past Palmer. Aquaro also had an assist on the power-play goal.
- Three minutes later, Conor Donovan cleaned up a loose puck in front of the goal for his third tally of the year. Azam Jiwa and Ryan Pappalardo had assists on the goal.
- Aquaro rounded out the scoring with eight minutes left in regulation. He ripped a shot from the left faceoff circle past the goalie for his 11th goal of the year. Daniels and Austin Mourar had assists on the goal.
LIMBING THE LADDER
- Aquaro became the 26th player in program history to play in 100 career games this evening.
- With three points tonight, Aquaro now has 125 (65g, 60a) for his career. He moved into fifth place on Hobart’s career list.
- He is fourth on Hobart’s career goal list with 65, five behind Scott Liming ’83.
- Aquaro’s 60 career assists are tied for ninth on the program’s all-time list with Ryan Michel ’15 and Matt Shibley ’96.
