Advocates rally to reform sentencing laws in New York

Over 500 people gathered at the Capitol on Tuesday to support legislation aimed at overhauling New York’s sentencing laws. The rally follows public outrage over the death of Robert Brooks, who was beaten by officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in December. Advocates hope the incident spurs broader criminal justice reforms.

State Senator Jeremy Cooney promoted the Earned Time Act, which would allow inmates to reduce sentences for good behavior and vocational training, aiming to reduce recidivism. Additional bills under the “Communities Not Cages” campaign seek to eliminate mandatory minimums and allow courts to review and adjust harsh sentences.

Advocates emphasized that the reforms promote rehabilitation over punishment, improving safety both inside and outside prison communities.
