A burglary in Auburn early Monday morning ended with an arrest after police tracked down a suspect vehicle and recovered stolen property within hours.
Officers were dispatched around 1:10 a.m. March 31 to a residence on Owasco Street for a report of a man attempting to break into an apartment. The caller told police the suspect had entered a second-floor unit and was still inside before fleeing on foot.
Police said the suspect was later seen running through the area and jumping a fence into a nearby backyard. The victim, returning home at the time, spotted an unfamiliar vehicle nearby and photographed its license plate before checking the apartment.
Inside, the victim discovered approximately 10 to 15 pairs of shoes — valued between $1,000 and $1,500 — had been stolen.
Officers identified a suspect as Matthew Rendino Jr. and issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for the vehicle, which was registered to an address in Baldwinsville. About an hour later, Baldwinsville police stopped the vehicle with Rendino inside.
Authorities secured the vehicle and, after obtaining a search warrant, recovered the stolen property, which police said was still inside.
Rendino, 19, of Baldwinsville, was charged with second-degree burglary and petit larceny. He was transported to Auburn police headquarters for processing and later taken to the Cayuga County Jail for arraignment.
