Dryden rallies after three killed in devastating house fire

A fast-moving house fire in Dryden left three people dead, including a young child, and forced firefighters to retreat during an attempted rescue as conditions rapidly deteriorated, authorities said.

Crews were called to a home on Cortland Road around 10:08 a.m. April 1 and found the structure fully engulfed upon arrival. Despite entering the home to search for victims, firefighters were forced to pull back as intense flames made conditions too dangerous to continue interior operations.

Officials identified the victims as Christy M. Oralls, 30; Katherine F. Gray, 31; and Paisley M. Wood, 3. Authorities said strong winds helped fuel the blaze, which burned for hours and drew response from more than 10 fire departments.

A fourth resident, identified as 54-year-old David Welch, escaped and was taken to Upstate University Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.

Family members shared photos of the victims in the aftermath and described Oralls as a mother of four with a “loud,” funny and outgoing personality. Officials also believe multiple pet dogs died in the fire, though only one has been recovered so far.

The fire has also taken a toll on first responders. Dryden Fire Chief Peter Tyler said crews were devastated by the loss and acknowledged the difficulty of pulling firefighters out during rescue efforts. Counseling services are planned for those who responded.

Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osbourne called the incident a “heartbreaking loss” and extended condolences to the victims’ loved ones and the broader community.

In the days since the fire, the victims’ family has turned to the community for support. A GoFundMe fundraiser created to assist with rebuilding efforts had raised $655 toward a $13,000 goal as of Thursday.

Organizers say donations will help the family begin to rebuild after losing a mother, her young daughter and a visiting relative, as the community continues to rally around those affected.
