Newark mother-daughter duo charged accused of lying about ownership of dog involved in bite incident

A Newark woman and her mother have been arrested and charged with falsely reporting an incident and submitting false documentation following a dog bite investigation in Ontario County.

Kate Ogdenski, 30, of Newark, and Charlene Ogdenski, 56, of Canandaigua, were taken into custody on January 16 after allegedly attempting to pass off their family dog as a stray. The Ontario County Humane Society said it received a call from Kate Ogdenski on the same day, reporting that her mother had found a stray dog and needed to surrender it to the shelter.

Arrangements were made for shelter staff to stay beyond regular hours to take in the dog, a black and white 1-year-old female American Bulldog named Chiante. Around 5:15 p.m., Charlene Ogdenski arrived at the shelter and reiterated the story, stating she found the dog on an unknown road in the Canandaigua area. She completed and signed paperwork affirming that she was neither the dog’s owner nor acquainted with the owner.

Shortly after Charlene Ogdenski left, staff scanned the dog for a microchip. The scan revealed that Chiante was registered to Kate Ogdenski. An investigation showed the dog had been involved in a biting incident at Kate Ogdenski’s residence on January 6. Following the mandatory 10-day confinement period, Kate Ogdenski allegedly coordinated with her mother to falsely report the dog as a stray to the Humane Society.

Charlene Ogdenski was charged with falsely reporting an incident in the third degree and offering a false written statement. Kate Ogdenski faces a charge of falsely reporting an incident in the third degree. Both were issued appearance tickets for Hopewell Town Court and released.

Chiante remains in the care of the Ontario County Humane Society, where she will undergo evaluation before being made available for adoption.
