In a landmark initiative, the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports has introduced the state’s first certification program for recovery residences. This voluntary program allows providers to apply for certification, enhancing access to safe, supportive housing for individuals in recovery from substance use disorders.
OASAS will offer up to $5 million in funding through the state’s Opioid Settlement Fund to certified providers. Residences can apply for up to $75,000 per site to improve services, facilities, and staffing. The funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Every individual has a different recovery journey, and our goal is to support them every step of the way,” said OASAS Commissioner Dr. Chinazo Cunningham. “This certification will help ensure that people in recovery have access to services that promote their health and well-being.”
Recovery residences offer non-clinical shared living environments designed to support residents through peer relationships and connections to community resources. These homes promote four pillars crucial to sustained recovery: health, stable housing, purpose through meaningful daily activities, and a supportive community network.
To achieve certification, providers must meet stringent safety and quality standards based on recognized local and national guidelines. Requirements include procedures for eligibility, support for Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT), proper staffing, and compliance with housing laws.
The initiative aims to strengthen the continuum of care for over 731,000 individuals served annually by the state’s addiction programs.
“This program emphasizes recovery as an essential part of addiction services,” Dr. Cunningham added. “I encourage providers to take advantage of this opportunity to expand and enhance their offerings.”
