Lawmakers push for ‘Good Food’ bill despite veto

New York lawmakers are reviving a proposal called the “Good Food bill,” aimed at allowing local governments to award food contracts based on values like sustainability, local sourcing, and equity—even if the bid isn’t the lowest.

Senator Michelle Hinchey emphasized that supporting local farms through slightly higher bids would strengthen the state’s rural economy and provide healthier food in public institutions.

Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed the bill, expressing concern that varying local standards could negatively impact producers.

However, bill sponsors, including Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, plan to negotiate changes, arguing that healthier food access could reduce healthcare costs and improve public health. Discussions with the governor are expected to continue this legislative session.
