Boil water order issued for Throop after water main break

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Residents in parts of Throop are under a boil water order following a water main break that occurred Thursday on Turnpike Road.

The Cayuga County Health Department announced that the break caused a drop in water pressure, raising the risk of harmful microbial contamination. The order affects homes on Turnpike Road between 1412 and 1916, as well as those on Donovan, Canoga, Northrup, Nugent, Youngs, Webster, Griffin, and McDonald roads.

The department advises residents to boil tap water for one minute and allow it to cool before use or to use bottled water approved by the New York State Department of Health. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, food preparation, washing dishes, and brushing teeth until further notice.

Health Director Kathleen Cuddy explained that loss of pressure in water mains can create conditions for bacteria and other microbes to enter the system, potentially causing gastrointestinal issues. People with compromised immune systems, infants, and the elderly are particularly at risk.

Town officials have isolated the affected section of the water system. Repairs are underway, and water service may be interrupted in some areas. Sampling will confirm when the water is safe, with officials expecting the boil order to remain in effect for several days.
