A Massachusetts man, Ryan English, was arrested near the U.S. Capitol on January 27 for allegedly planning attacks on top Republican officials, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Authorities found him carrying Molotov cocktails, a knife, and a lighter.
Court documents reveal English had shifted his target to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and expressed anger at the political climate. A vehicle search uncovered more explosive materials, and English left a note apologizing for his actions.
He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted on charges of unlawful firearm possession and carrying a dangerous weapon. His detention hearing is set for January 30.
