Sheriff’s accreditation and sales tax extension top agenda at upcoming Cayuga Legislature meeting

The Cayuga County Legislature will hold it’s January meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Ward O’Hara Agricultural Museum in Auburn with a handful of interesting topics on the agenda.

Among the meeting’s highlights is a presentation by Peter Kehoe, Executive Director of the New York State Sheriff’s Association, who will acknowledge the accreditation of the Sheriff Custody Division through the association’s Jail Accreditation Program. This recognition underscores the department’s adherence to state-mandated standards.

Proclamations include recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which was observed on January 20. Legislative action will also focus on a range of resolutions across departments, including public health, planning, and public safety. These include measures to hire staff for the Health Department’s WIC program, approve paving and surface treatment lists for 2025, and fill multiple positions within the county’s Sheriff’s Office.

A key item on the Ways & Means Committee docket is a resolution requesting state approval for an additional 1% sales tax extension through November 2026. This tax is a vital revenue source for county operations.

Another focus is the proposed salary adjustments for non-bargaining county employees in 2025, with full-time workers seeing a $2,300 base increase and part-time employees receiving a 2% raise. Public safety staffing concerns will also take center stage as the Sheriff seeks approval to fill several deputy and jail staff positions to address shortages.

The Legislature will also discuss contractual agreements, including renewal of the Department of Social Services’ collaboration with local nonprofits such as Catholic Charities and Cayuga Centers, which provide critical family support and foster care services.
