Senate confirms Marco Rubio as secretary of state

The Senate unanimously confirmed Marco Rubio as secretary of state on Inauguration Day, making him the first member of President Trump’s new Cabinet.

Rubio, a Republican senator from Florida and former Trump rival, garnered bipartisan support for his expertise in foreign policy and focus on China.

Rubio, the first Latino to hold the role, takes over for Antony Blinken and faces challenges like managing U.S.-China relations and global conflicts. While his confirmation was swift, other nominees, including defense secretary pick Pete Hegseth, are expected to face opposition in the coming days.
