Firefighters with the King Ferry Fire Department responded to three back-to-back calls early Sunday, including a structure fire that left minimal damage thanks to swift action by residents and responders.
The first two calls were for EMS incidents, with King Ferry providing mutual aid to the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department. As firefighters were returning to the station from the second call, a structure fire was reported on Bell Circle in King Ferry’s district.
The fire broke out in a double-wide manufactured home occupied by farmworkers from an adjacent dairy. A working smoke detector alerted the occupants, who, along with neighbors, used fire extinguishers to knock down the flames before firefighters arrived.
King Ferry firefighters, with automatic aid from Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, used a handline to extinguish the remaining fire and conducted an overhaul to ensure the blaze was fully out. Additional support came from the Lansing Fire Department, Moravia Fire Department, and Southern Cayuga Instant Aid, Inc., which stood by at the scene.

Though a 5-inch supply line was stretched to a nearby dry hydrant, it wasn’t required. Early detection and immediate action by the occupants and neighbors limited damage, leaving the home habitable.
The fire department credited the quick response and teamwork among mutual aid partners for preventing significant loss.
