New York students are among the most driven in the nation when it comes to securing high-earning careers, according to a new analysis by Avenues Financial. The state ranked fourth in the U.S. for searches related to lucrative college majors, with an average of 7,230 searches per 100,000 residents—a figure 76% above the national average.
The study examined Google searches for terms such as “major,” “salary,” and “application” connected to the 16 top-paying majors and 95 leading U.S. universities. Computer science emerged as the most-searched subject in New York, with a median mid-career salary of $125,000. Architecture ranked second, with aspiring architects estimated to earn $90,000 mid-career.
Massachusetts leads the country, boasting 9,133 monthly searches per 100,000 residents for high-earning degree paths. New Jersey and Connecticut placed second and third, respectively. Across all states, computer science dominated as the most sought-after major, followed by mechanical and general engineering.
Nicole Jensen, co-founder and CFO of Avenues Financial, noted the rising importance of financial stability for students. “Financial security is viewed not only as a necessity but as a means to alleviate student loans and achieve life goals outside of their careers,” she said.
