Following the 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, rates of permanent contraception among young adults surged, with tubal sterilizations rising by 70% and vasectomies by 95% among those aged 19–26, particularly in states likely to ban abortion.
The study, published in Health Affairs, found that fear of restricted reproductive rights drove many young people to opt for sterilization. Survey respondents expressed concerns about losing access to other contraceptive methods and the inability to make autonomous reproductive decisions.
Researchers emphasized the need for healthcare providers to support informed choices, ensuring decisions about permanent contraception are driven by autonomy rather than fear.
