U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has been appointed ranking member of the Senate Aging Committee, a role she says will focus on safeguarding the rights and well-being of older Americans.
In a statement released Thursday, Gillibrand expressed gratitude for the opportunity and underscored the importance of addressing the needs of the country’s rapidly growing senior population.
“I’m honored to have this opportunity to serve older Americans across New York and nationwide,” Gillibrand said. “More than 59 million Americans are aged 65 years and older, and that number will continue to rise in the coming years. It is absolutely essential that Congress leads the effort to invest in the well-being of our aging loved ones.”
Gillibrand outlined her priorities, including lowering prescription drug costs, protecting Social Security and Medicare, combating financial scams targeting seniors, and ensuring older Americans can age with dignity and financial security.
Having served on the committee since 2009, Gillibrand brings years of experience and a track record of advocacy on senior-related issues to her new leadership role.
As ranking member, Gillibrand will play a key role in shaping policy and oversight aimed at improving the quality of life for older adults across the nation.
