NY task force recommends health-led response for mental health 911 calls

The Daniel’s Law Task Force has proposed a statewide model prioritizing health professionals over police in mental health crisis responses, except when violence is threatened. The recommendations follow a year-long study prompted by the 2020 death of Daniel Prude in Rochester.

Key suggestions include dispatching trained crisis teams for behavioral wellness checks, piloting response programs in urban and rural areas, and creating a Technical Assistance Center for training and support.

State Senator Samra Brouk praised the report, expressing hope for the passage of Daniel’s Law in 2025, marking a significant shift in New York’s mental health crisis intervention approach.
