Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is preparing to invest over $10 billion in building a 40,000-kilometer subsea fiber-optic cable spanning the globe, according to sources close to the company.
The cable, Meta’s first to be solely owned and operated, aims to bolster its growing data traffic demands fueled by billions of users and its increasing focus on artificial intelligence.
The project will reportedly connect the U.S., India, South Africa, and Australia in a “W”-shaped route around the world, ensuring robust data pipelines. With the initiative still in early planning stages, Meta plans to unveil details in 2025.
Experts note challenges such as limited infrastructure resources could delay the rollout. If completed, this groundbreaking project would solidify Meta’s control over its global data infrastructure.
