In a game that featured six lead changes, the Buffalo Sabres came out on the losing end, falling 7-5 to the Montreal Canadiens on Monday afternoon at KeyBank Center, ending a three-game win streak.
Buffalo (7-8-1) led 5-4 in the third period, but goals scored 2:58 apart by Emil Heineman and Cole Caufield put Montreal (5-9-2) ahead for good.
Dylan Cozens, Peyton Krebs, Rasmus Dahlin, and JJ Peterka scored goals for the Sabres along with Tage Thompson, who exited the game early in the second period and did not return due to a lower-body injury.
Mattias Samuelsson also left the contest with a lower-body injury and did not return.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 14 saves on 18 shots in two periods before giving way to Devon Levi, who made two saves on four shots.
Buffalo went 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.
The Sabres will close out a three-game homestand on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host the St. Louis Blues.
