Montezuma Wildlife Refuge habitat expanded through state-led restoration project

Three New York state agencies have completed a habitat enhancement project at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, revitalizing 180 acres to support native wildlife. Initiated in 2021, the collaboration between the New York Power Authority, state Canal Corp., and Department of Environmental Conservation focused on boosting water flow within the refuge’s wetlands by creating new channels. This effort reconnects the Seneca River to its floodplain, enriches plant diversity, and provides crucial nesting and foraging habitats for numerous bird species.

The project included invasive species control and planting native vegetation, enhancing the habitat for waterfowl like mallards, American black ducks, and rare species such as the black tern and American bittern. Situated along the Atlantic Flyway, the Montezuma Wetlands Complex hosts millions of migratory birds each year, drawing eco-tourists and nature enthusiasts.

Conservation leaders praised the restoration, underscoring its role in safeguarding bird populations amid ongoing habitat challenges.
