Cayuga County man charged with aggravated DWI after head-on crash in Sennett

A Cayuga County man faces multiple charges after deputies said he was driving with a blood alcohol content more than three times the legal limit before causing a head-on crash that injured multiple people in the Town of Sennett.

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck said deputies arrested Murray Rogers, 55, of Sennett, following the April 29 crash on Franklin Street Road.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 4:24 p.m. to a reported motor vehicle crash with injuries and found two heavily damaged vehicles with airbags deployed. Multiple ambulances were called to the scene and victims were transported to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment.

Investigators said Rogers was traveling eastbound when the vehicle he was operating crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle.

Deputies said Rogers admitted to consuming alcohol and later submitted to field sobriety testing before being taken into custody. Authorities said a chemical breath test later recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.28%, more than three times New York’s legal limit of 0.08%.

Rogers was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, moving from a lane unsafely, operating a vehicle with an open container of alcohol and failing to wear a seatbelt.

Officials said Rogers was arraigned in Cayuga County Centralized Arraignment Part court, where his driver’s license was revoked. He was later released on his own recognizance.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing.
