Defying national declines in college enrollment and diversity, the State University of New York (SUNY) anticipates a second year of growth across its campuses. Creative initiatives and targeted programs are credited with attracting more students and enhancing diversity within the state’s higher education system.
Governor Kathy Hochul recently unveiled the SUNY Top 10% Promise Program, guaranteeing admission to top-performing high school seniors at select SUNY schools. “We want people to understand that there’s a place at SUNY for every New Yorker,” a SUNY spokesperson said.
Assembly Higher Education Committee Chair Pat Fahy praised the program’s role in countering national trends. Preliminary figures indicate enrollment increases at institutions like UAlbany and SUNY Schenectady County Community College. Final enrollment numbers are expected soon, but officials remain optimistic about sustained growth.
