New York risks losing $74 million in highway funding after refusing to cancel thousands of commercial licenses, according to the Associated Press.
State officials sued the U.S. Transportation Department, led by Sean Duffy, after an audit flagged issues with immigrant-issued CDLs. Federal reviewers said many licenses stayed valid longer than drivers’ legal status allowed.
New York leaders, including Letitia James and Kathy Hochul, argue the state followed the rules at the time. They call the funding cut political and warn it could hurt road safety projects statewide.
