The Seneca Museum of Waterways and Industry will unveil an interactive tugboat exhibit in January 2025, offering visitors an immersive experience aboard a replica of the historic vessel, “The Urger.” The exhibit, modeled after the educational tug operated by the New York State Canal Corporation, is being funded by the Bonafiglia Family Foundation and Bruce and Lisa Bonafiglia.
“We see the museum’s interactive tugboat exhibit as a fun and engaging way to showcase our history,” said Judy Wentzel, Executive Director of the Bonafiglia Family Foundation. “This will appeal to guests of all ages and abilities while celebrating Seneca Falls’ rich canal heritage.”
Designed by Tamarack Designs from Trumansburg, N.Y., the exhibit will feature wheelchair-accessible access to the boat’s bow and a fully functional wheelhouse. Guests can operate a steering wheel, ring the bell, and use engine levers while watching footage of canal travel, simulating the experience of navigating New York’s barge canal system.
Ahead of the exhibit’s January opening, the museum is offering visitors the chance to have their names inscribed on the tugboat’s bow through its “Purchase a Plank” program. The public reception for the exhibit will coincide with its official launch.
