As students in the Hornell City School District return to class on September 5, they’ll be doing so without their cell phones. The district has implemented a complete ban on phones during school hours, aiming to eliminate distractions and improve the learning environment.
School officials explained the decision, citing ongoing issues with students using phones for non-educational purposes. Last year’s “red” and “green” zones, which allowed limited phone use, have been replaced with a total prohibition from 8:05 a.m. to 3:03 p.m.
The ban also extends to smartwatches, headphones, and earbuds. While the policy may face initial challenges, Palotti expressed confidence that students and staff will adjust to the new rule.
The move coincides with broader discussions led by Governor Kathy Hochul on reducing smartphone use in schools, though district officials say the decision was made independently.
