On May 1, the opening day of the spring turkey season, ECO McNamara of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Law Enforcement took action against illegal hunting practices in Steuben County.

Acting on a tip about an area baited with oats, Officer McNamara responded to the location in the town of Bath. After hearing a gunshot, McNamara waited several hours until a suspect approached a truck in the area. The individual admitted to shooting a turkey from a ground blind in the baited area.

The hunter was ticketed for hunting turkey with the aid of bait and for killing protected wildlife except as permitted by law. Both charges are returnable to the Town of Bath Justice Court.

In 2023, the DEC’s Division of Law Enforcement handled over 30,932 complaints, resulting in nearly 16,900 tickets or arrests for various environmental violations.
