Cornell police officer charged with vehicular assault after drunk driving crash seriously injures Ithaca College student

An early Saturday morning incident on Slaterville Road in Ithaca led to serious injuries for a pedestrian and charges against the driver. New York State Police reported that a 19-year-old Ithaca College student was struck by a vehicle while walking along the 1500 block of the road.

The student was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital with serious injuries following the crash, which occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. on May 4.


The driver, identified as 30-year-old Blake A. Curtis of Ithaca, faces charges of vehicular assault, a class E felony, and driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. According to police, Curtis called 911 immediately after the accident to report the incident.

Officials from Cornell University confirmed on Monday that Curtis is an officer with their police department. Since his arrest he was placed on administrative leave.

The State Police have indicated that the investigation into the crash is ongoing as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
