Tax Refund Tracker: See 2024 IRS payments using online tool

With the IRS having processed over 34 million tax returns and disbursed nearly $67 billion in refunds just one month into the tax season, anxious taxpayers are on the lookout for their refunds. Fortunately, the IRS offers a convenient way to monitor the status of your tax refund without the need to constantly check your bank account.

IRS: If you’ve been waiting on your refund, you might see extra because of interest

The “Where’s My Refund?” tracker, available on the IRS website, provides real-time updates on your refund status. To utilize this tool, you’ll need your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, your filing status, and the exact refund amount. Once you’ve inputted this information on the Get Refund Status page, you can immediately see the progress of your refund. If your details are accurate but you’re not redirected to your refund status, a re-verification of your tax data may be necessary. Remember, it takes at least 24 hours to start tracking an e-filed return and up to four weeks for a mailed return.

The tracker updates with three key status messages: “Received” indicates the IRS has your return and is processing it, “Approved” shows your return has been processed and your refund is on its way, and “Sent” confirms your refund has been dispatched, either directly to your bank or via mail.

For those puzzled by error messages or the mention of “Tax Topic 152,” these notifications usually point to additional reviews or processing steps, common with claims like the child tax credit. With this streamlined tracking method, taxpayers can easily stay informed about their refund’s status, ensuring a smoother and less stressful tax season.
