Lawsuit claims state police covered up child abuse by former trooper

  • Staff Report

A lawsuit filed against New York State alleges a cover-up of sexual child abuse by former trooper Roger L. Coon Jr., who is now deceased. The accuser, David Gregson, claims that Coon used his position to molest children during the late 1970s while stationed as a trooper in Ballston Spa, where Gregson attended elementary and middle school.

According to the lawsuit, enabled by the 2019 Child Victims Act which temporarily lifted statutes of limitation, Gregson was repeatedly abused by Coon. The abuse allegedly occurred in various locations including Coon’s home, a camper, and a police cruiser. Gregson asserts that Coon threatened to place him in foster care if he disclosed the abuse.

The case is set to commence in court this July. Historical records from CBS 6 indicate that Coon was previously convicted in 2001 for sexually abusing two brothers and had a prior conviction in 1994 related to child endangerment.
