A tragic multi-vehicle collision on state Route 13 in the town of Veteran resulted in one fatality and significant traffic disruptions Thursday morning. New York State Police responded to the crash at 8:20 a.m.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2019 Chevy Silverado with an attached trailer, operated by a 25-year-old Pine Valley resident, was merging left due to a lane ending.

As this occurred, a 2016 Ford Fusion, driven by a 41-year-old Ithaca resident, accelerated to pass the Chevy. This resulted in the Ford striking the Chevy’s rear and trailer, causing its driver to veer into the opposing lane where it was subsequently hit by a southbound 2018 Freightliner, driven by a 33-year-old from Skaneateles. The Chevy’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the crash, the Ford’s driver was airlifted to Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Pennsylvania and is currently stable. The Freightliner driver was assessed and cleared by emergency services on site. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
